Erythritol: An artificial sweetener with insecticidal properties

Summary: Although safe for human consumption, the artificial sweetener, erythritol, has been shown to be insecticidal against fruit flies. We found that 20-30% erythritol is also insecticidal to pear psylla, twospotted spider mites, rust mite, and codling moth. Erythritol could be developed into an organic insecticide to manage key pear pests.
