Research Assistant Intern

Michael started with the commission in March 2024 and will be interning for a year. He will be assisting with lab and field activities; harvest, bloom counts, fruit monitoring, lab tests, internal disorders, crop load management (which he plans to write his bachelor thesis about) and more.

Michael grew up in Jork, Germany; a town near Hamburg. He had training as a fruit grower at the fruit farm of Marco Voelkers in Wisch for two years. After that, he passed his practical and written exams to become a certified fruit grower. Michael is currently a student at the Hochschule Osnabrueck, University of Applied Sciences.

Michael has worked at the family-owned farm in Jork where they have apples, cherries and pears. He worked for one year as a foreman at Frank Koepcke Orchards in Luehe, Jork which had apples and cherries mainly.

Michael has two older brothers; one is a fruit grower at their family farm and the other is a salesman. Michael’s Father is a fruit grower and his Mother works in accounting.

Michael likes soccer (is a supporter of HSV; a soccer club in Hamburg) and interested in most sports such as American Football. He enjoys reading books, watching movies and of course growing fruit (specifically cherries, pears and apples).
