Optimizing light and water for orchards covered with netting

Author: Lee Kalcsits, Giverson Mupambi, Tory Schmidt

Published: 2020

Summary: Netting is used for apple sunburn and hail protection. This project determined the effect of shading factor and reflective fabric on apple fruit quality. 10-17% and 17-24% shade is sufficient for Honeycrisp and Granny Smith apple, respectively. Reflective fabric improved fruit color under netting. Water-use is 20% lower under nets.
