Summary: The objectives of this project were: Identify new natural compounds effective as antifungals. In apple orchards, controlling a phytopathogenic disease is problematic as chemical controls are currently very limited for several fungal diseases. In the past three years of study, we identified a set of natural compounds with great promise for controlling fungal pathogens. We proved antioxidative stress response/defense systems are essential for fungal tolerance to the natural compounds identified and are potentially useful molecular targets for control of fungal pathogens such as Penicillium. We also focused on developing/determining an effective method for delivery of newly discovered natural compounds, leading to a target-specific strategy for an easy, safe and economic approach to pathogen control.
